13 Months of Sunshine

Spring is officially here, even if the local weather sometimes forgets it. Last night's rainfall turned into a skiff of snow (I like saying skiff of snow) this morning, but it's now warm & sunny and my side of the street is snow free. In addition to all the snow that's been reguritating it's nasty self over the last few weeks, we've had some very grey days. We need more sunshine to bring out the smiles on everyone's faces.

"13 Months of Sunshine" is the slogan used by the Ethiopian Tourist Board. It refers to the fact that Ethiopia has a 13-month calendar (12 30-day months followed a 5 or 6 day holiday month). There are actually more like 10 months of sun due to the rainy period.

13 Months of Sunshine is also a Ziggy Marley song with great lyrics. I'm not familiar with the melody.

13 Months of Sunshine is also the name of a film by a film by Yehdego Abeselom - produced and performed by a group of Ethiopian Americans.

There is a review of the film at The EthiopianAmerican. Here's an excerpt:

A review of Yehdego Abeselom’s
Thirteen Months of Sunshine”
By Yohannes Assefa

The subject of the American dream is a popular theme for immigrant filmmakers. Ethiopian American filmmaker Yehdego Abeselom’s “13 Months of Sunshine” is no different. But Yehdego’s exploration of the American dream is anything but your traditional American story. It is uniquely Ethiopian American.
