Possible ban on BPA baby bottles

The big news yesterday(other than the latest Calgary spring snowfall) was the possible ban on baby bottles made with BPA (bisphenol A) plastic. Canada is starting a 60-day study today to determine if the plastic is, in fact, a health risk to babies. Apparently, Canada is the first country to take this step. If the results of the study are bad, BPA bottles could be banned from Canadian shelves by this Fall.

Here are some notes from a local news website:

- The federal government is moving to ban baby bottles and further limit exposure to children and the environment from bisphenol A.

- Health Canada has concluded that there is a risk of exposure to the dangerous chemical in baby bottles and cans of infant formula.

- The environment could also be at risk with bisphenol A leaching out of wastewater and treatment plants.

- The government is proposing a complete ban on polycarbonate baby bottles, restrictions on the use of the chemical in infant formula cans, and listing bisphenol A on the list of dangerous chemicals.

- A 60-day public comment period will begin on April 19th for the government to hear from industry and other stakeholders.

- Plastic water bottles for adults will not be banned and officials say there is no health risk.

Stacie gave her recommendation on the Born Free, no BPA bottles the other day. There's some good info in her post and in the comments.
