Hair care for kids

I spent about 2 hours reading through this forum the other night: Long Hair Care Forum.

There are some great tips and pictures about caring for black hair. It took a while to get used to some of the lingo (CON shampoo/conditioner = Curl of Nature brand, 3b, 4c hair textures, etc.). It's encouraging to see that not everyone knows how to cornrow/braid their girl's hair (and these are black mommas we're talking about here).

I feel a little pressure is off. And now I know where to go for a refresher on the best products.

I must say though, that some women use A LOT of different products on their kid's hair. My mother didn't do that and I don't think I will. Just a shampoo & conditioner, and a moisturizer/oil after the wash (I don't believe in heavy 'grease' - UGH, I hate that term - on the scalp). I've never liked anything greasy on my head, clogging up my pores & attracting dirt). I also don't like stinky hair stuff because I can't stand the smell (it interferes with my Chanel No. 5, of course) plus my skin is very sensitive to heavy perfumes and oils. None of that coconut, fruity stinking stuff for me or my kid, I tell ya.

I can't believe some mom's put harsh chemicals (relaxers, curly perms) in their children's hair as early as 5!! I was about 12 when I got my first jheri curl (yuck!). My kid is NOT having chemicals in her hair until she's 18 (she wrote confidently) and can make her own informed decisions. Check out some of the pics on that forum. Some of those girls have gorgeous, natural hair. LOVE IT!

There are some great videos showing hair care styles at Shuruba, a wonderful Canadian website run by Shelley.

I'm sure there are other good sites out there with child hair care discussions. Anyone have any links?
